Twitter – 140 characters of #hashtagged shortened messages beloved by content marketers and President-elect Trump. But is it the right place for you to promote your business? Here are a few key facts and statistics to keep in mind:
- Only 21% of adults in the US use Twitter
- Younger adults use Twitter – 36% of online adults ages 18-29 as opposed to only 10% of people in the 65+ age bracket
- If your customers are college educated, you're more likely to find them on Twitter. 29% of online adults with a college degree are on Twitter, compared to 20% of online adults with only a high school education
- Men and women use Twitter relatively equally
So, how do you know if it's a good fit for your business?
- Does your target audience use Twitter? Take a look at the statistics again. If your target market is retirees, or those seeking their GED, it's less likely that you'll reach them with your Twitter messages.
- Is there an existing community on Twitter of people who match your target profile? Research hashtags and Twitter chats to see if there's already a conversation that you can participate in?
- Do you have time in your schedule to manage Twitter? Some statistics show that you should tweet as much as 40x a day. (I'm not saying this is necessary for you – it seems pretty extreme, even to me!) But you do need to consider the time it takes to find content, write thoughtful messages, and engage with followers and influencers. No social media profile is better than a neglected one!
- How personal is the relationship with your customers? For most people, Twitter is a less personal channel than Facebook.
- Do you have financial budget to advertise? Paid advertising on Twitter isn't required, but for most social media to be successful you'll have to invest either financially or with time.
